Go Beyond the Beaches and Explore Authentic Bali on a Cute and Lovable Beast, the Elephant

Article by Exotissimo Travel

Combine your tour of Bali with one of the most beloved animals out there. Climb on the back of these gentle giants and see the lush and serene environment of Bali from a unique perspective. This tour also gives you the opportunity to see the island’s unique fauna up close and to experience authentic village life. So, saddle up and experience Bali with our Carang Sari Elephant Ride day trip.

You will actually be riding the Sumatran Elephant, a sub-species of the Asian Elephant which in turn are the smaller cousins of the African Elephant. Don’t let this fact mislead you, they are still big! In fact they can grow to about 2.6 meters at the shoulder and can weigh anywhere between 3,050 – 5,000 kilograms!

The sad fact is that there are only a couple thousand of these big guys left in the wild. There are camps that accept elephants and care for them in hopes of preserving the animals. One such place is Bali Elephant Camp in Carang Sari, where you will meet and ride your new friend for the day.

The friendly staff will welcome you with open arms and serve you a refreshing tropical fruit juice while waiting for your elephant to arrive. As you sip your juice, feel the thuds and hear the roar of your new friend. Say hello to its mahout and climb aboard! Just a side note. Mahouts and elephants share a unique bond with each other. The trainers are usually assigned an elephant when they are young boys and throughout the time, man and beast would develop a relationship not seen anywhere else. Elephants can live up to 70 years old, so both can end up spending their entire lives together.

The mahout will guide his companion for a ride through mango, jackfruit, durian, coffee, bamboo and coconut plantations. Some of the fauna you will encounter include colorful birds and tree-swinging monkeys as well as insects and tropical reptiles. You will also come across domesticated animals such as pigs, cows and buffalos in the small village of Buanga and realize their importance in the lives of Bali’s farmers. Explore the village and step into one of the houses where you will chat with the farmer over a fresh coconut drink.

The return trip back to camp is just as scenic, giving you a second chance on snapping at shots that you may have missed on the first leg of the trip. Return to camp and say good-bye to your new buddies. Enjoy lunch at the appropriately named Trunk ‘n Mahout for a delicious Western or Balinese three course meal.
