Spiritual Yoga Tour in Bali

By: Bulls
Posted: Apr 21, 2011

Spiritual yoga tourism is now becoming a world trend. Why? Some say that by practicing yoga one can relieve stress. While, some also believe that yoga is managed of delivering spiritual bliss. And others believe if they come up with essential values in this life happiness will come having been deeply involved in yoga.

Whatever their reason is, Ann Barros, a US national, believes that yoga can heal the physical illness she suffers from. “Prior to learning yoga, I had an aspiration to become a US professional ballerina,” she said to Bali Travel News while adding that such aspiration failed when she knew that she suffered from scoliosis (abnormal lateral curvature of the spine).

Then in 1976, she learned yoga under guidance of BKS Iyengar. She first knew him from her younger sister that has learned yoga earlier than her from BKS Iyengar in India. She told her about spinal straitening through yoga. By the influence of yoga ‘asanas’ her scoliosis totally recovered. So did joint disorder and other illnesses. “It was a surprising finding,” she said.

Other than scoliosis and joint disorder, in accordance with her research, yoga also relieves stress. Stress is disturbance that can result in various illnesses and yoga is one of alternatives to resolve them. “I will mention respectively the illnesses often caused by stress, namely headache, insomnia, asthma, depression, digestive system and excretion disorder, apart from other illnesses,” she pointed out. During the menopause, stress can also causes a condition named “pstosis” (disorders on urethral vessel or uterus). By practising yoga in reversed or semi-reversed style, blood circulation will be reversed, hormonal balance occurs and muscles of urethral vessel will be tightly stretched. “For men that undergo constriction on foot muscles or prostatic disorders can also recover by this position,” she said.

There are so many benefits of yoga, then ‘Aunt Ann’, her familiar name in Bali, introduced Spiritual Yoga Tour to Bali. Probably, she was the first (US) expatriate that brought the Americans to Bali for practicing yoga. At least, she offers three times tour program to Bali in a year. All her tour programs are sold on the Internet and it won extraordinary appreciation from the citizen of Uncle Sam. For 40 years of her spiritual yoga journey, she has handled 15-20 guests every time she comes to Bali. “I am very glad to transfer our yoga knowledge to whomever,” said the woman whose age now has been more than half-century. “During my stay in Bali, I am very delighted to be among the Balinese people who are very friendly.”

Ann Baros is not the only one expatriate who brings her colleagues to have yoga tour to Bali. There are tens foreigners that follow the footprint of Ann. One of them is Janet (JJ) Gormley, a US national. “I have such wonderful memories of my recent trip to Bali. My reason for being there was two-fold: to co-teach (with Barbara Benagh) a two-week-long yoga workshop and to absorb Balinese culture,” said Janet (JJ) Gormley on her article at the Internet about Yoga in Bali, recently.

As she came from USA, a halfway around the globe, a 12-hour time-zone change to go to Bali is no problem for her to teach Practicing Yoga. Each day, she teaches twice every morning and the other in the afternoon, for approximately 4 hours. The usual routine was yoga in the morning (7 to 9am before it got too hot), followed by a leisurely breakfast, and then a daytime excursion.

For afternoon yoga class was usually from 4 to 6pm followed by dinner and occasionally punctuated by an evening cultural experience – a Balinese dance or orchestra performance. Excursions were optional and we had lots of free time for shopping, swimming in a beautiful pool with a disappearing edge, reading or simply relaxing.

Learning and practicing yoga in Bali is not only in Ubud and its vicinity. Almost all nooks and crannies of Bali Island are centre for spiritual tourism, starting from Sanur, Ubud, Seminyak, Nusa Dua, Pacung, Karangasem up to Munduk mountain ranges (Buleleng) and other region are ideal for spiritual tourism (Read also: Spiritual Tourism at Nusa Dua Tourist Resort and Spiritual Tourism in Buleleng).

In addition, some hotels like Melia Bali, Nusa Dua—also provides space for its guests to exercise yoga. It’s easy for us to find out that prepares cool room to practice yoga, either in Nusa Dua, Kuta, Sanur, Pacung, Sidemen (Karangasem) and so forth. It is the superiority of Bali as world tourist destination. Every inch of its territory is good for spiritual yoga tours. Precisely, things that should be given attention are the upgrade of local teacher’s competence. These days, it is more expatriates that teach yoga here in Bali.

Many Balinese itself, as a matter of fact, have capability of teaching yoga. However, they commonly teach yoga just for the sake of personal interest. “We are necessary to give exercise to the Balinese,” said Meghan, the operator of Bali Spirit in Ubud that also provides spiritual yoga tour. According to Meghan, the Balinese has known about yoga perfectly from time immemorial. Predominantly, they know yoga from the book that inherited through generations, especially in the surroundings of geria (house to high priests). They practiced yoga just for their self-interest. “Therefore, I am going to open ‘Training the Trainer’ yoga course for the Balinese,” she said.

The trend of spiritual yoga tour has indeed been popular throughout the world. Westerners, American and European make yoga their daily part of sport and spiritual exercise. Those belong to this group that will visit Bali, considering this island retains unrivaled spiritual ‘taksu’ (divine inspiration) to other tourist destinations. Is Bali capable of competing to other tourist destination? Let’s wait the readiness of the Balinese themselves to enhance their knowledge, moreover, on the assistance of ‘foreigner’ that will open training for them.

Top 5 attractions in Bali – More Than Just Soaking up the Sun

Article by Pushpitha Wijesinghe

You may be able to drive around the coast of Bali in a day, but don’t let the size of the island deter you. Ribbons of beachfront property, glistening waters where the surf is always up, paddy fields, enchanting temples, mesmerising traditional dances, colourful festivals and many a Bali luxury resort are within easy reach. For those who enjoy rest and relaxation, there are many offerings to choose from. For those who enjoy the seduction of dancing under the stars till the wee hours of the morning will discover that Kuta in Bali is just what you were looking for.

Whether your taste is for fresh cuisine and the ultimate in luxury, or the chance to soak up the sun and sip on a chilled beer, you are sure to find it at Bali.

With access to so much beachfront property, one of the most obvious pursuits to partake in would be water sports. Just about any sport played on the water and below its surface can be enjoyed in Bali. Travellers will find a range of service providers who take care of all the arrangements and provide equipment for rent. Visitors will also get a chance to ride on an elephant, take a picture with a baby tiger or orang-utan as well as many other animals.

Kuta is another aspect of Bali that is well worth visiting. The narrow alleys brimming with restaurants and eateries serving reasonably-priced cuisine coupled with a multitude of nightlife options ensure that there is always a crowd around these parts. Founded in the 17th century is a Hindu temple that is among the must-visit cultural attractions in Bali. Known as Pura Ulun Danu Prata, impressive statues and carvings can be seen herein, enhancing the beauty of its location.

Step away from the bustle of the city, traffic and throngs of tourists by visiting Nusa Lembongan. Neither motor vehicles nor hawkers mar the breathtaking pristine beauty of this little island just off the southeast of Bali. Visit the two famous beaches, the intriguing Hindu temple by the name of Puncak Sari and make sure that you witness the sunset here, whose beauty is legendary. There are many things the island Bali has to offer, and making sure your Bali resort allows easy access to the many sights and sounds is crucial to the enjoyment of your trip. Anantara Seminyak Bali is nestled on the popular shoreline of Seminyak and is a leading Bali luxury resort.

10 Things You Didn’t Know About Bali

By: Raymond Horsfall
Posted: Jul 09, 2010

Bali’s status as a relaxed, sunny tourist destination with lovely beaches and great Bali accommodation is well known. See how many of these other intriguing facts you were aware of:

1. Balinese People Commonly Have One of Four Names – Wayan, Made, Nyoman and Ketut

Theses names are used for the first, second, third and fourth born respectively, so don’t be surprised if you keep meeting people with the same names! Putu, Kadek, and Komang can also be used for first, second and third borns.

2. Bali Is Known As The “Island of the Gods” , With An Estimated 20,000 Temples and Shrines

With such a large amount of temples, it is not surprising to note that Balinese Hinduism pervades most facets of traditional life, with ornate rituals regularly seen around these temples and shrines.

3. Bali is a Predominantly Hindu Island, in a Predominantly Muslim Country.

Around 93% of Bali’s inhabitants are Hindu, with around 5% being Muslim. This is the reverse of Indonesia overall, where 86% of the population are Muslim, and only around 3% Hindu. Bali became a Hindu refuge centuries ago, as Islam gained influence in Java.

4. Mount Agung, an Active Volcano, and Bali’s Highest Peak At 3,142 m (9,426 feet), Last Erupted in March 1963.

It is possible to climb Mount Agung, though it does still cough up smoke and ash on occasion. The 1963 lava flows amazingly all missed the temple perched on Agung’s side, Mother Temple of Besakih, despite killing 1500 people.

5. Bali Has Been Colonised by the Dutch and the Japanese.

The Netherlands’ control over Bali from the 19th century continued until Imperial Japan occupied it during World War II. The Netherlands subsequently regained control until 1949 when they recognised Indonesian independence including the territory of Bali.

6. Bali’s Fauna is Representative of the Indomalayan Ecozone, Whereas Nearby Lombok, Just to the East of Bali, Has Fauna More Similar to that of Australasia.

Bali is the southernmost island of note in Asia to display very few environmental influences from the South Pacific.

7. Bali Counts Three UNESCO World Heritage Sites Within Its Shores

These are the archaeologically and historically important Pakerisan Valley in Central Bali, the Pura Taman Ayun temple, built in 1634, and the Jatiluwih Rice Terraces in the Tambanan area.

8. The World’s Most Expensive, And Most Unique Coffee, Can Be Found in Bali – Kopi Luwak.

It is made from the beans of coffee berries which have been eaten by the Asian Palm Civet and other related civets, then passed through its digestive tract, yielding a unique coffee with no bitterness. A cup of this coffee has retailed for as much as US0 overseas, but a “relative” bargain may be available locally.

9. Many Balinese are Trilingual, speaking Balinese, Indonesian and English.

Balinese is the local tongue, Indonesian the unifying national language, and English the language to serve you, the tourist.

10. Babi Guling, a Local Version of Suckling Pig, is a Balinese Specialty.

This delicious dish can often be found outside the main tourist areas, so keep a lookout along the road for signs with a pictured pig!

Some Bali hotels will be able to arrange tours or car services to experience some of these interesting aspects of Bali.

This was my 2nd visit to Bali, my first one being in September 2005. After checking into the lovely Swastika Bungalows in Sanur village, the first thing i realised was that i had forgotten to pack all my Dive ID cards & log books. Bugger. Thats torn it. Thankfully there was a savior in Kirsty at home, who managed to grab by Dive ID cards, scan them on her PC & email them to me in Indonesia, & i managed to get a copy of them printed off in the hope that the Dive Shop would accept it! Then she kindly arranged for Fedex express delivery to send my cards & log book, guaranteed in 5 days to our hotel in Bali. Maybe this was an omen for me not to dive this holiday…. Next problem: Flying out of Bali. Our cheap flight deal meant the flight from Bali did not suit us, so we were to change it when we arrived. Unfortunately, all flights on the day we needed to depart for Malaysia were full – owing to the 50th year Independence day celebrations on 31st August in Malaysia. So, before we could start enjoying ourselves, we needed to sort something out, & after 24 hours of huffing & puffing, Air
