Things To Remember Before You Make A Trip To Bali
Article by Nigel Fine
A trip to Bali sounds exciting but you must never forget to research online on the various activities that take place in the place, its culture, Balinese lifestyle, commutation details and other such information. While you get all set to pack your bags and board on the flight there are a few pointers that you must remember to do like carrying your own calculator because at places of money exchange you may need it and it is reliable when it is yours. You must exchange money at reputable places and carry them in a bag along with other valuables, if any, on a bag that is safely worn across your shoulders. This is to prevent the theft of handbags which are on a rise in Bali owing to its vast tourist attraction. It is a must to carry a high factor waterproof sunscreen because the weather conditions in Bali is of tropical nature and the last thing you need while coming back home is skin burns and rashes. Also it comes in handy for all you swimmers out there. Swimmers must also make sure they stay within the boundaries that are drawn across the water bodies. Never carry or buy drugs at the island and consequently get imprisoned for it
Carry around with you your passport and a photocopy of your photo id but leave the other important documents in the hotel rooms where they would be safe. Try and add salt to your food and cultivate a habit of drinking a lot of bottled water since you are bound to lose water from your body in the form of sweat. Do not worry about the ice served in bars and nightclubs; they are officially approved on their quality by the government. Never cross the road without double checking for any approaching vehicle, because cars may halt for you but motorbikes may not. Have a thorough knowledge on the currency used in the country which is known as rupiah.
There are many ways of commutation in Bali. You can either rent a car or a motorbike or get on a bus for tourists or catch hold of a cab. If you are above 18 years of age and wish to rent a car for yourself and drive it on your own then you must remember to carry your driver’s license. Try and rent a car with insurance because accidents seem to prevail in the island, especially because of rash motorbike riders. Keep a keen eye on the road and do not get distracted while driving because the last place you want to go on a holiday is to an emergency room in the hospital.
Most of the Balinese people follow the Hindu religion and at the time of your travel there are chances of you coming across many religious ceremonies in your vicinity. At times like these, you might be intrigued and attracted towards these rituals, but there are certain things that you mustn’t do to avoid offending the local people. For example, you must always wear a sarong and sash, a representation of the traditional costume, and never walk in front of people who are praying, never flash a camera at a priest, never sit higher than the priest or the offerings, in case of women, never enter temples when you are menstruating, try not to step on offerings fallen on the street and try and walk around it, try not to touch people’s head, it is considered offensive. If you are in a moving car that is blocked by a religious procession, be kind and patient with them and do not honk at them.
Have a thorough study of the things that you must avoid doing in Bali and experience an exuberant vacation therein.

A Surfing Safari – Your Bali Holiday
Article by Claire Bryant
Anyone heading off on a Bali holiday is greeted by this island paradise with open arms. Bali is well renowned for her beautiful beaches, exciting non-stop nightlife and the wonderfully warm locals. But at anytime of the year, the hotels in Bali are filled with the most enthusiastic of all guests – the die hard (or try hard!) surfers.
Bali is often the first and last stop off on any Indonesian surfing safari, but it is also destination in its own right. Many of the hotels in Bali are only a stone’s throw away from wide sandy beaches and easily accessible surf breaks of every size and difficulty. The year round swell off the deep southern oceans of the Antarctic, means that Bali has a non stop supply of surf. The swell flattens out once it reaches the reefs and creates the perfect conditions for a true surfing Nirvana. There are around twenty top class breaks around the island to choose from, and surfers of all ages and experience are generously catered for by Mother Nature! A Bali holiday between April and October offers the best conditions for surfing, although unfortunately everyone else is heading there between these times too, and it can become quite busy on the line-up at some of the more popular breaks.
BEGINNER’S BREAKS
Unlike the rest of Indonesia which is heavily reefed, Bali has a lot of smaller breaks more suited to the beginner or intermediate. Kuta is probably Bali’s most famous beach and there’s a great surf tradition of ‘anything goes’! The sandy bottom and waist deep water means that anyone from six to ninety six can get out on their board and give it a try. Whether it’s hanging ten, toes on the nose or total wipe-out – you can ride the fun waves at Kuta without fear of shredding any body parts on an exposed reef! There are lots of surf schools and board hire shops, so if you have never surfed before – Kuta is the perfect place to start!
A lot of the hotels in Bali are close to the easy riding Kuta and Legian beach surf areas, and when the sun goes down you can come straight out of the break, and head for a cocktail! You can outdo each other with tales of gnarly waves and killer surf, and then party on with the legendary Kuta nightlife. For the budding grommets and Gidgets, it’s only a few steps from bed where they can dream Bali holiday surfing adventure!
SERIOUS SURFING
Veteran surfers will be heading over to the pounding breaks at Padang Padang or Uluwatu on their Bali holiday. Padang Padang has an awesome ‘killer’ wave and this world class spot should only be attempted by the most experienced surfer! It is one of the most dangerous waves in Bali to face up to, as the coral reef is almost entirely exposed. But even if you can only dream of conquering the wave, it’s still worth coming along to watch the brave make their assault.
Uluwatu with its famous entry cave is probably the busiest of all the surf breaks in Bali. You clamber down the dramatic cliffs and through the cave which leads out onto the beach. The waves at Uluwatu are fast and long, and the view from the break is breathtaking – but in the monsoon season the waves here can reach a terrifying fifteen feet so this location is definitely not for the feint hearted! As well as a constant swell at Uluwatu there is also a constant crowd – so be warned, if you do chance your luck against the giant waves, you’ll have an audience!
The island’s popularity as a surfing destination has increased so much, the hotels in Bali and the more popular beaches are heaving in high season. But the hidden beauty of this tiny surfing Mecca is that if you’ve got a bit of time, and a slightly adventurous streak, you just might find yourself surfing a break on a deserted beach with only the fish to see you fall!

Time Travel: Visit the sites of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
Article by Theresa Pecks
These historic places are absolute must sees for any person that loves to travel; you will certainly be unable to understand the immensity and grandeur of these destinations until you have seen them in person. The seven wonders of the ancient world include the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Hanging Gardens, the Temple of Artemis, the Statue of Zeus, the Mausoleum, the Colossus of Rhodes and the Pharaohs of Alexandria.
The Great Pyramid of Giza
The Great Pyramid of Giza is the oldest of the Seven Ancient Wonders and it is no wonder how it got its name. You will look minuscule compared to the enormity of this pyramid. This pyramid was constructed under the reign of Pharaoh Khufu and its use is quite the human mystery.
The Hanging Gardens
The Hanging Gardens is located on the Euphrates River to the south of Baghdad in Iraq. No one is quite sure as to the meaning of the Hanging Gardens as it is only preserved in the ancient Greek writings and is detailed as one of the most blissful gardens with water irrigation and other royal luxuries spread throughout this magical location.
The Temple of Artemis
This temple was built for the Greek goddess Artemis and was one of the most elegant and graceful temples ever erected. It was located in the ancient city of Ephesus, in the south of Turkey. This building was different from other similar structures as it was made out of pure marble.
The Statue of Zeus
Zeus was the God of all Gods and as so, was honoured with this gigantic, golden statue located in Olympia, Greece, where the Gods were thought to have resided. Unfortunately the original has been destroyed yet the aura of his statue remains in this ancient city.
The Mausoleum
Located in the south west of Turkey, this elegant Mausoleum once stood tall. It was used as the ancient burial grounds for the king. The mausoleum used to be about 140 feet high and decorated with life size statues of animals and people created by the most gifted artists in Greece such as Scopas and Bryaxis.
The Colossus of Rhodes
This ancient world wonder had a short life span of about 56 years. This was a gigantic statue that symbolised the unity of the inhabitants of the Mediterranean island in Rhodes, Greece. The structure was made out of marble, iron, stone and bronze. It was about 110 feet high and was an inspiration to many artists, especially Auguste Bartholdi who created the Statue of Liberty.
The Pharaohs of Alexandria
The Last ancient world wonder was located in Alexandria, Egypt and was the only wonder with a definitive purpose of helping sailors return home. It was a gigantic lighthouse that inspired many because of its grand architectural design.
As you travel throughout the modern world, discovering these ancient seven world wonders, make sure you have invested in comprehensive travel insurance that will cover you in the case of a medical emergency, a cancellation in your flights or a delay in your trip!

Possibly, there is no place in the world with such high concentration of artisans and craftsmen as in Bali Island. You will be able to discover it here – Balinese painting, mask, wood sculpture, woodcarving, stone carving, silver and gold smiths, basket weavers, egg painting, puppet, terracotta and ceramics, full variety of Bali handicrafts – the list goes on forever. Here is a short list of several of the finest things or products available and you are able to go to find them.
Wood handicrafts and Woodcarving Traditional Balinese woodcarving has been of religious subjects all the time. In the 1930’s though a new type of carving developed in Mas near Ubud catering to the tourist market. Nowadays, the best Balinese carving galleries are still there. Another main area for wood carving is on the road up to Sebatu village. This is the district where a large amount of the new antiques are made.
The most important part is that you find something you like for a price you can pay for. There are also many other Balinese standards like wooden banana trees, wooden flowers, Bali wooden masks and the type of things that might often be found at cheaper prices. Wood handicrafts for souvenir like wooden nameplate, wooden jewelry boxes, key chains, wind chimes, and many choice types varied of color and form can be found straightforwardly in most art shops in Bali.
Stone CarvingThere are many types of stone carving for example traditional Balinese sculpture, hyper-realist animals, modern style, etc. The favored material for stone carving is known as volcanic tuff that resembles the colour of cement when it is newly carved. Many visitors to Bali think that they are cast, not handmade. To see the fact with your own eyes, have a look at the bend in the road in Batubulan village which has long been touted as being the center of stone carvers.
Silver and Gold smithsThe Celuk village is now lined with galleries all selling silver ware. They are typical Balinese work using granulation and a process of attaching gold to the surface of silver. At the moment the industry is very sophisticated and includes everything from traditional pieces to contemporary designs.
Other handmade arts and craftsThese include paintings, wood puppets, shadow puppets, basket weavers, terracotta figurines, ceramics, wooden chess boards, Balinese musical instruments, textiles, costumes, furniture, large potterys from Lombok, leather works from Java, primitive statues from the eastern islands, brass bowls, bronze statues and other decorative items.
Shopping for art and craft is believed to be enjoyable and Bali island is one the best places in the globe to find something attractive and beautiful for yourself or somebody that you love.

Bali Nightlife
Article by Celestine
Apart from sunbathing, surfing or treking, there are not a lot of entertainment here. Waterbom, on Jalan Kartika Plaza in Kuta is a cool amusement park, although very expensive for Bali, with half a dozen of pools, good waterslides, and a nice tropical garden (entry ticket: /adult; /child). Also, just before Ubud on the road coming from Kuta, Bali Bird Park (entry ticket: /adult; /child), presents an amazing collection of exotic birds, coming from all over Asia and Australia, in a beautiful forest with hidden aviaries. At night, things are different. A two-week holiday in Bali is too short to try all the places there… Anyway, things begin to happen around midnight. You can choose to head for Paddy’s, on Jalan Raya – Kuta, a big club with two dance floors, usually packed by twenty-somethings.
But serious party-goers will prefer to walk through Jalan Dyana Pura in Seminyak, THE street for night bars in Bali. There is a new bar opened nearly every month there, but the most famous are still the Q-Bar (very gay, big, and good house/techno music), the Santa-Fé (rock and reggae, with live bands, open 24h), the Café Del Mar (cozy and Mediterranean, with live DJs playing progressive and trance) or the trendy Spy Bar (trendy, really). Most bars – and Paddy’s – will close around 2 o’clock in the morning, which is roughly when the night begins to start.
Most people will rush to Club 66, on Jalan Double Six – Seminyak, for techno and trance music till dawn, unless there is a trance party elsewhere on the beach or at Euro Club, also on Jalan Double Six. After Club 66, which generally closes at 5, the choice is more limited. The Scandal, on Jalan Dyana Pura, will allow you to finish the endurance race. It opens at 4:30 and will close at 8 in the morning. Don’t forget your sunglasses.

Popular Native Traditions of Bali People
Article by Bali Villa Holidays
Bali is an island that offers so much splendid beauty that has tourists coming back to visit the island. The people are very warm and the culture and traditions are something worth learning. The Balinese are genuinely happy people, perhaps attributed to their strong faith in Hindu. They have the belief that a balance should be maintained between the spiritual and the physical world to have peace and prosperity.
People in Bali share many things in common. They have a vivid organization of villages and farming. Almost all aspects of life are placed in the hands of two traditional committees, which are the Subak and the Banjar.
The Subak is concerned of the production of rice. As such, it is responsible for taking care of the irrigation system to ensure that every member of the community gets his/her fair share of irrigation water. It is a tradition for the head of the Subak to have his sawah so that the water will have to pass through the sawahs of the members before reaching his own. There is also the Banjar which is responsible for arranging the village festivals and marriage ceremonies and cremations. The villages have one Banjar and the men are expected to join one once they get married. Banjar has an estimate membership of 50 to 100 families and they each have a meeting place of their own which they call the Bale Banjar. This place is where the meetings are usually held and this is also where the gamelan orchestras and drama groups practice.
Every stage of Balinese life has ceremonies and rituals which are called the Manusa Yadnya. The first of these ceremonies takes place even before birth, followed by another ceremony after the birth wherein the afterbirth is buried with the proper offerings. The first major ceremony is held halfway through the baby’s first Balinese year of 210 days.
Balinese people basically has four first names and these are Wayan or Putu for the first child, Mane or Kadek for the second child, Nyoman or Komangfor the third, and Ketut for the fourth. The preceding children will be given the same names following the same order. It can also be noted that Bali has many children. This is because they love children. After the ceremonies of babyhood is another one which will mark the stages of childhood and puberty. This includes the important tooth-filing ceremony.
Everyone in Bali is expected to get married and have a family. Marriages usually take place at a young age. Unlike other Asian countries, marriages are not arranged. Instead, they are divided in two forms, the mapadik and the ngorod. The mapadik is the respectable form which requires the family of the man to formally visit the family of the girl to propose marriage. Ngorod, on the other hand, is the elopement. This does not come as a surprise to the people because they are practical people. The couple could go and hide somewhere so as to avoid being found by the girls’ parents. They will jus re-emerge for the official marriage to take place.
Truly in every country there are many traditions that can be learned and explored. These are what make up the people of the country, thus giving the country an identity. In Bali, there are many other traditions that can be learned to have a better understanding of the place. These traditions, when witnessed are a great way of educating the self and making your stay in Bali more exciting.
