Bali For Beginners

I have been travelling to Bali at least annually for the past 20 years. During that time I have seen Bali undergo some massive changes some good and others not so good. I have witnessed the devastation that two bomb attacks left, I have also witnessed the determination of a beautiful race of people not to let such a tragedy overcome them.

I love Bali! I love the people, the climate, the beauty, the ugliness and I want to share with you what it is I love about it.

In no particular order I recommend the following activities, and eateries. (By the way as a general rule of bartering I recommend you divide the original price you are given by 4 or 5 – but at the end of the day I always say pay what you are prepared to pay

Activities

Snorkelling (or diving if your qualified) at Nusa Lembongan – You can either catch a public boat over (about 2 hour trip) or go over with one of the tourist boats(30 – 45 min trip). Be warned the water there can be very cold as three ocean currents converge so if you own a wetsuit I encourage you to take it…otherwise make arrangements in advance to hire one. Sunset at Tanah Lot – The most famous of Bali’s seven sea temples Tanah Lot was reportedly built in the 1500’s. The sunset is amazing so best to visit in the late afternoon. Git Git Falls – Located near Lake Bratan Git Git Falls are one Bali’s lesser famous gems. Barong Dance – This Balinese dance is about a contest between the opposing forces of chaos and destruction (“Rangda”) and order (the “Barong”). Most hotels or restaurants perform this dance at least once a week so keep an eye out for signs. Bali Zoo – The first and only zoo in Bali, the Bali Zoo is famous for getting you up close and personal with a variety of wildlife for Indonesia and it’s neighbours

 Eating Out

Whilst it is now very commercialised and heavily over priced (by Balinese standards) I recommend everyone should have seafood at one of the many restaurants located on the sand in Jimbaran Bay. Now everybody will tell you to eat at this place or that place truth be told there isn’t a lot of difference between any of the restaurants…so I suggest taking a look at the seafood they have on offer, see if you can get and out door table and if you like it take a seat and enjoy! If you want to spoil yourself you cannot go past Ku De Ta. Located next to the Oberoi Hotel in Kuta, Ke De Ta boasts tempting seafood and contemporary dishes. It also has an extensive wine list. I especially like the cigar lounge. This is one not to be missed! Café Jepun – Located in Sanur this is possibly my favourite restaurant. Very reasonably priced and the portions are a good size. I highly recommend the lumpia (spring rolls) followed by the Rendang Sapi (Beef Rendang)

If you are heading to Bali for your first time I hope you enjoy yourself and love the place as much as I do.

I am a father of 4 who has travelled the world. For years I have searched for something I am utterly passionate about with little or no success. I finally found it – my home business. This has opened up a world of possibilities within me. I have always felt that I had something of meaning to contribute to my fellow man. If I can make a difference to the life of just one person, if someone can say their life was more enriched through knowing me, then I am satisfied

I am currently working on a children’s book (or more appropriately a children’s character who I will base a series of books around). The aim of these books are to educate and help children set goals and use their imagination.

I am passionate about assisting people to achieve through focusing on their future not dwelling on your past. Your past is what may have shaped you but it is your future that defines you.

I encourage you to read my articles and hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them – my only wish is that you take something away from them. I welcome all feedback both positive and constructive so feel free to drop me an email info@livealifeofwealth.com

Bali, Indonesia is one of the hottest destinations in Asia. It has a great mix of pristine white sand beaches, beautiful landscapes as well as traditional culture which will welcome any tourist with the potential to enjoy a great vacation. If you have a trip planned to Bali, Indonesia in the near future, you should definitely consider the following 10 most popular things to do in Bali while you there.1. Bicycling in Ubud – Ubud is very famous for its various bicycle tours where tourists can hop on one of the local bikes and ride through villages surrounded by rice paddies and plenty of local culture. You could also take a day long trip to a village in Ubud called Petulu which is very famous for its massive heron roosting that happens every night. 2. Surfing in Kuta – If you want beaches where you can surf, find girls in bikinis and also be able to visit many night clubs along the coastline, Kuta is definitely the place you want to go to. There are plenty of surf schools here if you really want to learn how to surf in just one day. 3. Enjoying the sunset at Tanah lot – This is a temple site in the southern region of Bali where one can witness one of the most beautiful sunsets in the country. There is an air of mystery that surrounds Tanah, a temple that is supposedly guarded by the local snakes. 4. Doing the Kecak dance in Ulu Watu – Make a trip to the Ulu Tatu temple where they do the kecak dance at 6 PM every night. This is a tribal dance where hundreds of locals will chant while a few performers will perform a dance, which very interestingly, was actually first introduced by a German several years ago.5. Menjangan Island snorkeling – This Island lies in the west coast of Bali and might be a long trip. However, the trip will be well worth your troubles as it is deemed as one of the best snorkeling locations in the entire world.6. Lake Bratan – Visit the beautiful Pura Ulun Dany Bratan, a temple located right in the midst of a lake. It is a very romantic and serene location to visit.7. Climb Mount Batur – Many tourists wake up very early to begin climbing this beautiful mountain at 4 AM. It will take about 2 hours to hike to the top before they are presented with a magnificent sunrise that blooms over the mountains.8. Try the local pork – Pork is a delicacy in Bali or pretty much any other part of Indonesia. Try the famous Babi Guling dish in Ubud which will sell for just about .50 when you convert the local currency. This is usually served for lunch and quickly sells out by 11 AM. It will have your lips smacking.9. Rafting – Ubud is a great place to sign up with an adventure sports company that will take you through the rapids. Prepare to get drenched. 10. Buffalo race anyone? A visit to Negara will allow you to catch quite a wonderful spectacle where mammoth water buffaloes, with jockeys complete, race against each other.

Bali – Land of Ritual and Ceremony

Article by Anwar H

Bali is the the land of a thousand temples and a thousand festivals, where religious adherence to a large number of rituals are an integral part of everyday life. A combination of traditional Hinduism and local indigenous beliefs, Balinese Hinduism has a rich tradition of both small and large ceremonies that commemorate everything from the loss of a tooth to the warding off of evil spirits. There are five distinct Hindu Balinese rituals such as the Dewa Yadnya, temple festivals that deal with the worship and reverence of the gods; and Buta Yadnya, which involves ritual sacrifice to allay demonic spirits. Others include Rsi Yadnya, rites honouring preists; Pitra Yadnya, rites relating to death; and Manusa Yadnya, rites to cleanse the inner soul of sin.

Among the major festivals in Bali are the Galungan, a major feast celebrating the annual descent of all the Gods to the earthly realm, followed ten days later by the Kuningan ceremony. Other big festivals are the Nyepi, an annual day of silence on the Hindu-Balinese New Year; Saraswati, a day devoted to Dewi Saraswati, Goddess of knowledge and literature; and the temple festival of Odalan, an annual ceremony of the construction of a temple based on the 210 day Balinese calendar – due the the huge number of temples in Bali there are several Odalan festivals taking place throughout the the island on any given day.

Another important ritual in Balinese culture is the cremation of the departed. An integral part of Balinese life, cremation is a cheerful and communal affair where an entire village comes together in an elaborate ritual whose ultimate goal is placing the ashes of the departed in the sea. This act signals the final separation of soul (roh) from earthly body.

Many visitors to Bali have fallen in love with various ceremonies that celebrate creation both on a grand cosmic scale and on a more intimate personal scale. Some visitors have even opted to remain in Bali, a faraway island paradise where people take the time to celebrate the gods in heaven and the cycle of everyday life on earth – something lacking in today’s fast paced, spiritually bereft world. If you are looking for a much needed change of pace in your life, then consider making a permanent move to Bali by investing in the international property market there. Bali is a heavenly island belonging to the Indonesian archipelago on the Indian Ocean. Besides its incredible beaches, Bali offers a fascinating cultural life and folklore, as well as charming markets, amazing landscapes and innumerable opportunities to enjoy all sorts of leisure and relaxing activities.

Beaches in Bali are no doubt the main tourist attraction, since they are quite spectacular, with its golden sand, its crystal clear water and its dream coastal landscapes. However, this small island offers countless opportunities to discover and enjoy a whole range of activities and places to see during your holidays in this magical island. In this first article we suggest a small sample of them:

Shopping

Bali offers wonderful opportunities to go shopping, especially if you are looking for different types of crafts and antiques and as well as other picturesque goods. Furniture is definitely a must in Bali, handmade and antique, as is silver and gold jewellery and art, including paintings, hand-woven fabrics and wood or stone carvings. You can visit a number of village markets, as well as the famous markets at Ubud, Sukawati and Sanur. It may be handy to know that at these traditional markets prices are not always set and can thus be negotiated, so be ready to bargain!

Eating

Eating in Bali is a truly delicious and adventurous experience. Although it is not always easy to find a good balance between authentic Balinese food and good service or beautiful surroundings, it is worth trying different places and meals. The base of most recipes in Bali is steamed or boiled rice, which is then accompanied with meat (mostly chicken, beef, pork, duck and goat), seafood and all sorts of vegetable cooked in every way imaginable. But what gives Balinese food its very special exotic taste is the use of spices, especially garlic, ginger, lemongrass, cardamom, nutmeg, tamarind, saffron and turmeric, as well as several kinds of chillies and shrimp pastes or coconut, peanuts, shallots, etc.

Ecotourism

If you are into a different kind of tourism or want to experience nature beyond lying for hours on the beach, Bali is a fascinating and enormously varied island with all sorts of activities for the practice of ecotourism. There are different parks for different tastes, all of which are quite lovely: there is, for instance, the Taman Burung Bird Park in Singapadu; the the Bali Elephant Safari Park in in the jungle forest of Desa Taro; the stunning Bali Barat National Park in the Western tip of the island, etc. You may also want to visit the more peculiar Bali Sangeh Monkey Forest near the village of Sangeh Bali, the Botanic Garden at Ubud or the spectacular Blahmantung waterfalls.

Come to Bali and enjoy this fascinating island, its marvelous natural setting and the amazing variety of activities they offer. The most attractive option for accommodation is to choose among the many fantastic villas for rent in Bali, since Bali villas offer all sorts of top-quality services at competitive rates and in truly beautiful places in this unique island.

Top Five Tips for Backpacking in Bali

Congratulations, you’ve packed your bags and booked your tickets. You’re just about to step out the door, wave goodbye and embark on your Bali travel. But are you ready? Before you set off on your backpacking trip, make sure you’ve completed the following tasks on this last minute checklist.

Be Prepared: The better prepared you are, the safer and more enjoyable your travel will be. If you’re travelling in an organised group, find out what arrangements have been made for you and what arrangements you need to make for yourself. Do some research on your destination and prepare the necessary documentation.
Travel Insurance: This is very important. You are strongly advised to take out comprehensive travel insurance. Is it too expensive? Can’t afford it? If you’ve said yes to these two questions, you cannot afford to travel. Accidents happen. You should not base your decision to take out insurance on the assumption that “it will not happen to me”.
Passport and Visa: Make sure these are valid and up to date.

Who are backpackers? According to the dictionary, a backpacker is a person who hikes with a backpack. To most people, backpackers are independent travellers on a tight budget. Seeing that backpackers have a tight budget to keep, here are five tips for backpacking in Bali.

Top Five Tips for Backpacking in Bali

Sleep Cheap: There is no lack of cheap accommodation in Bali. These affordable yet comfortable hostels and motels dot the coastline and can be found in the city as well. You can sleep in a private room and one with a view no less for as little as ! With such a good range of hostels, you can forget about the expensive international chain of hotels.
Eat Local: As tempting as they may be, try not to fall for “big Aussie breakfasts” in Bali. They may remind you of home but they can cost as much as your accommodation — ! Eat at local food stalls instead. It is worth taking the time to venture out to the back roads to look for local warungs. These are “semi-restaurants” that serve dishes you would find in restaurants at a fraction of the price. The names of these places usually begin with “warung”.
Take a Walk: The best way to get around Bali is on foot. If your next destination is not within walking distance, take a public bus or minivan. These options are way cheaper than the transportation offered by travel agencies. The most reliable bus company with the widest network is Perama. Another option is the ojek. This is an informal type of transport where local bikers ferry you to your destination on their motorcycles. It is a cheap, fast and fun way of getting around.
One for the Road: Travellers buy souvenirs. It is what they do. Just remember that when you are in Bali, don’t buy souvenirs in Kuta or any other tourist area. Head to the central market in Denpensar on the Pasar Sukowati instead. Here, arts and crafts, clothes, paintings and souvenirs are cheaper.
Haggle Your Heart Out: Bear in mind that whatever vendors ask for their authentic, mass-produced Balinese paraphernalia, it is the price they hope you’ll pay for it. The rule of thumb is to pay what you think it’s worth to you. Yes you should haggle but try not to go overboard. These sellers are also trying to make a living.

Looking to book holidays to Bali? Then find Bali hotel accommodation, other tourism resources and Bali island tours with Bali Dream Tours. Make online bookings for hotels and villas in Nusa Dua, Jimbaran, Tuban, Seminyak, Ubud, Kuta, Sanur and other areas of Bali by visiting Bali Hotels
