10 Things You Didn’t Know About Bali

By: Raymond Horsfall
Posted: Jul 09, 2010

Bali’s status as a relaxed, sunny tourist destination with lovely beaches and great Bali accommodation is well known. See how many of these other intriguing facts you were aware of:

1. Balinese People Commonly Have One of Four Names – Wayan, Made, Nyoman and Ketut

Theses names are used for the first, second, third and fourth born respectively, so don’t be surprised if you keep meeting people with the same names! Putu, Kadek, and Komang can also be used for first, second and third borns.

2. Bali Is Known As The “Island of the Gods” , With An Estimated 20,000 Temples and Shrines

With such a large amount of temples, it is not surprising to note that Balinese Hinduism pervades most facets of traditional life, with ornate rituals regularly seen around these temples and shrines.

3. Bali is a Predominantly Hindu Island, in a Predominantly Muslim Country.

Around 93% of Bali’s inhabitants are Hindu, with around 5% being Muslim. This is the reverse of Indonesia overall, where 86% of the population are Muslim, and only around 3% Hindu. Bali became a Hindu refuge centuries ago, as Islam gained influence in Java.

4. Mount Agung, an Active Volcano, and Bali’s Highest Peak At 3,142 m (9,426 feet), Last Erupted in March 1963.

It is possible to climb Mount Agung, though it does still cough up smoke and ash on occasion. The 1963 lava flows amazingly all missed the temple perched on Agung’s side, Mother Temple of Besakih, despite killing 1500 people.

5. Bali Has Been Colonised by the Dutch and the Japanese.

The Netherlands’ control over Bali from the 19th century continued until Imperial Japan occupied it during World War II. The Netherlands subsequently regained control until 1949 when they recognised Indonesian independence including the territory of Bali.

6. Bali’s Fauna is Representative of the Indomalayan Ecozone, Whereas Nearby Lombok, Just to the East of Bali, Has Fauna More Similar to that of Australasia.

Bali is the southernmost island of note in Asia to display very few environmental influences from the South Pacific.

7. Bali Counts Three UNESCO World Heritage Sites Within Its Shores

These are the archaeologically and historically important Pakerisan Valley in Central Bali, the Pura Taman Ayun temple, built in 1634, and the Jatiluwih Rice Terraces in the Tambanan area.

8. The World’s Most Expensive, And Most Unique Coffee, Can Be Found in Bali – Kopi Luwak.

It is made from the beans of coffee berries which have been eaten by the Asian Palm Civet and other related civets, then passed through its digestive tract, yielding a unique coffee with no bitterness. A cup of this coffee has retailed for as much as US0 overseas, but a “relative” bargain may be available locally.

9. Many Balinese are Trilingual, speaking Balinese, Indonesian and English.

Balinese is the local tongue, Indonesian the unifying national language, and English the language to serve you, the tourist.

10. Babi Guling, a Local Version of Suckling Pig, is a Balinese Specialty.

This delicious dish can often be found outside the main tourist areas, so keep a lookout along the road for signs with a pictured pig!

Some Bali hotels will be able to arrange tours or car services to experience some of these interesting aspects of Bali.

An Unforgettable Story About Bali Diving

Article by Made Dertha

In 1982 I worked as an English speaking tour guide, but during my free time I learned Italian language by my own method autodidact using English – Italian; Italian – English dictionary and grammar book.. I spent about 2 hours a day to learn it, sometime early in morning, in the afternoon and sometime late at night. I succeeded to keep in my mind 2 words a day but I found much difficulty in learning the grammar because it is very different with my mother language Balinese and Indonesian, but I insisted to meet with success. Day by day, week by week and month by month, and….. finally I got it.

In October 1982 one of my friend who run a travel agent in Bali asked me to handle his clients, they were Italian and speak a little English. That was my first time to practice my Italian tongue. When I met them at Bali International Airport, the first question I must answer was “where is the best place to dive”. With honesty actually I didn’t know the answer, but I promised them for the good news the day after.

I visited my friend’s house and meet Bli Monyoh, a fisherman live in Sanur the village on the southeast coast of Bali. I knew he was a good fisherman and very smart in shooting fish, diving with his own talent using very simple dive equipment.

We talked about diving places and he told me that in order to discover most enjoyable dive, must visit 2 o 3 different places of the fascinating underwater world among the coral reefs. Mr. Bli Monyoh looked at his Balinese calendar to see a good day to go to the sea. My clients were crazy about dive.

The first day he brought us to Semawang at Sanur by his outrigger sail boat. Located in front of Sanur Tourist Beach. Dives at a few meters depth was rewarded by beautiful underwater panoramas, table and trophy shaped coral and sponges, a thousand of colorful fishes swim by in kaleidoscopic profusions. I am not a swimmer or a diver, I just sit on the boat and prepared the needs when they go up. Was a wonderful day.

The second day Bli Monyoh brought his companion a smart diver named Agung Toya, together with them some gun (exactly an arrow) unwound by a strong rubber band made of tire. Before living Sanur, Bli Monyoh laid an offering and perfumed incense in front of a temple and prayed to God. Along the road about one and a half our drive, he stopped several times for praying where there are temples for God’s blessing, safety and luck. Even before touching the water he did so.

When we arrived at Buitan was a very traditional fishing village, located at the district of Manggis Karangasem eastern Bali near Candidasa, I was amazed by the beauty of the nature, a spectacular panorama or the terraces ricefield, rural ambience and the Majestic Mount Agung at the far back, for Bali it is the place of the Supreme God “The Navel of the World”. The sea was magnificent, clear blue water, remained untouched by modern influences, seduce everyone especially beach and dive lovers. Now Buitan boast a luxury 5 stars hotel and some small accommodations in Balinese style bungalow.

When we were preparing everything for dive a cordial local man came close to us and gave his own wooden boat used for free in the hope of us catching a lot of fish. We sailed at 09.00 a.m in calm sea. About 50 m from the beach we arrived on the coral reef where the wave breaks itself. Under very good weather we could see a wonderful underwater world among the coral reefs.

My Italian clients brought their own dive equipments because they were the holder of PADI license. While the native divers used their own talent. Wow, wow, wow, what a great day, we fished a lot (only selected fish), one thing surprised me that Bli Monyoh got 4 king lobsters. At 11.00 a.m. we finished our adventure and the local man was waiting us on the beach ready with his woods fire, chili, onions, garlic, salt and coconut oil. We grilled our fish in relax atmosphere on the beach with nice breeze of the ocean, than enjoyed a delicious gala lunch in cowboy style. Wow amazing, we really celebrated and enjoyed a great day.

Now in Bali there are some exciting and fascinating, world renowned dive sites: Nusa Dua, Sanur, Padang Bay, Gili Tapekong, Tulamben, Amed, Nusa Penida and Lembongan and Menjangan Island.

So if you are a sea and dive lover why don’t you choose Bali for your next destination, this enchanting island is waiting for you with its fascinating underwater world. Plan your travel and book your preferred hotel or contact your travel agent. The quickest and the easiest way is, go online and choose Bali Dive. One of the most reliable dive center on the island now is Ena Dive Center (www.enadive.co.id).

Useful Bali travel info about the airport taxi

Article by Matt Verbaan

If you have just arrived at the Nugurah Rai Airport then here are some Bali travel tips that might come in handy. Especially if there is nobody from your hotel waiting for you at the arrivals hall. Because then there is only one option left for you: the airport taxi.

Unlike other airports throughout Indonesia, you won’t be approached or followed by dozens of taxi drivers asking you if you need a taxi. Instead at Nugurah Rai Airport all the taxi drivers are waiting for their customers at a taxi booth, indicated by a big blue sign.

Behind the counter you can see a list of all the major Bali travel destinations with the exact price behind it. After you tell the person where you want to go (hotel name, street name or village) you have to pay immediately. And that’s that, so no need to pay the driver anymore later on.

I did hear, though from other travelers that when you are at the taxi counter you should know your exact destination and in which village your hotel is located. It seems that the people at the taxi counter sometimes want to confuse you on where your hotel exactly is. Some village boarders are not very clear, especially in Kuta area.

So if you for instance say that you want to go to a specific hotel in Legian, the taxi drivers will claim that that it is located in Seminyak. This village is a bit further away so in the end you pay more then necessary…

But from my own experience the taxi drivers are ok. Do make sure though, that the taxi driver actually drops you off in front of your hotel. One time our taxi driver did not want to make a detour through Kuta because everything is one-way traffic. So he said that we could just get out as our hotel was just 1 minute walk away. But I guess he got minutes confused with kilometers…

The prices of the airport taxi are of course a tiny bit more expensive than a regular taxi which cruises around town. But these regular taxis are not allowed to pick up any customers from the airport; they are only allowed to drop them off. So you have no other choice then to go for the official airport taxi.

Make sure you keep this Bali travel tip in mind when you set foot on the beautiful tropical island after a 12 hour long haul flight. If somebody approaches you with a ‘better price’, decline it immediately. I understand that it sounds tempting to go for a cheaper taxi ride, but usually at the end you pay more than expected and you’ll have a bad start of your holiday…

And let’s face it, if you are coming from Australia, Europe or the United States then a 1 hour drive for about USD$ 8 isn’t what I call expensive.

The airport taxi prices for the major tourist destinations are in Indonesian Rupiah:Kuta: 40.000 Kuta Center: 45.000Seminyak: 55.000Sanur and Nusa Dua: 85.000For hotels further away in Nusa Dua: 95.000Ubud: 175.000Candidasa: 300.000Denpasar (depending on which area): 60.000 – 80.000

If you planning to use the taxi to go to other Bali travel destinations or if you plan head back to the airport then I highly recommend the Blue Bird taxi-company. Indonesians throughout Indonesia even prefer to hop in a Blue Bird, so you should too.

There are other taxi companies as well but their reputation isn’t that good as Blue Bird’s. Their drivers are very polite and always on time when you have ordered a taxi by telephone. That is a good thing to know if you have to catch your plane home at 6am, right?
