Coral reefs surround the island. The beaches in the north have black sand while those in the south have white sand. The regions culture is influenced by the Indian and Chinese. It economy is mostly based on the agriculture sector for both output and employment. In recent time tourism has also flourished making it Indonesia’s wealthiest regions. It has suffered significantly after terrorist bombings in 2002 and 2005. But it is slowly recovering once again. Those taking Bali flights won’t be disappointed as the island is famous for its artisans. They offer a variety of handicrafts, batik and ikat cloth, stone carving, silver ware, wooden carvings, painted art and many more. Balinese and Indonesian are the widely spoken languages in the island. English is their third language.

Some of the tourist locations in the town are Kuta for its beach, suburbs like Legian and Seminyak, the coast town of Sanur, Nusa Dua and Pecatu. In 2010 it received the Best Island award by the Travel and Leisure. This award was presented in New York’s show named “World’s Best Award 2010”.
